Tamarind is said to help with digestion, boost your immune system, promote blood circulation, reduce inflammation and more! Lots of great benefits packed into one tiny fruit. So many great reasons to try this sweet tamarind juice!

I have such beautiful memories of hanging out with my grandparents, drinking  jugo de tamarindo or a tamarind juice. To this day, if I visit my grandfather, he is sure to offer some within minutes of us arriving. I found fresh tamarind in the supermarket recently and decided to give it a try. I don’t know his exact recipe but this one comes close!

Sweet Tamarind Juice

  • Serving Size : 1 Cup

  • Servings Per Recipe : 6

  • Prep time : 45 Minutes

  • Cook time : 30 Minutes

  • Source : Coco Verde

    Ingredients

  • 6 Cup Filtered water

  • 16 Ounce (oz) Tamarind pods

  • 5 Tablespoon (TBSP) Sugar (optional)

Directions

  1. Crack open the tamarind shells. Discard the shells and keep the sticky fruit. If there are any veins on the tamarind, now is the time to pull them off.

  2. Slice open the tamarind and take out the seeds.

  3. In a medium sauce pan, add the 6 cups of water as well as the tamarind. Bring the water and tamarind to a boil and then simmer covered for 30 minutes.

  4. Once the 30 minutes have passed, give it a taste! If you decide to add the sugar, add it now.

  5. Transfer the tamarind water mixture to a blender (everything including the fruit and sugar if added) and blend on high for a minute or two until smooth.

  6. That's it! Feel free to drink it warm or let it cool in a container in the fridge. Enjoy!
