Tangy Passion Fruit Barbecue Sauce

The weather has been moody recently in Boston so we were absolutely ecstatic to hear that it was going to be nice out this weekend! Breaking out the grill for the first time called for some homemade barbecue sauce. This passion fruit barbecue sauce is perfectly tangy. Once you try it, you’ll want to have it at all of your cook outs!

The Details

We dreamed up this barbecue sauce a few weeks ago and we are excited to finally put it into action! We slathered it on some skewers and Portobello steaks this past weekend but you could put this on anything. Wait until you try this sauce, it will change the way you think about barbecues! It’s tangy, sweet, savory — everything you need in a barbecue sauce.

The best part? It’s so easy! Makes me think that I should have been making my own barbecue sauce forever ago.

Once you have your ingredients together, sweat your onions, garlic, and cubanella together in the oil in a large pot. You want this to pretty much be a slow simmer and you’ll keep this temperature consistent throughout the process. When the onions are turning translucent, add the coconut vinegar and let it all come together. Next, add the rest of the ingredients, one by one. Add salt and pepper to taste. Let slow simmer for about an hour or until the sauce is nice and thick and it has all come together.

Once you’re happy with the consistency, you can take the sauce off the heat. Pour it into a food processor or blender and blend until smooth.

That’s it! Feel free to slather it on your favorite veggies and throw them on the grill or on pretty much anything else — the possibilities are endless!
